What Wire EDM Does
  • Wire EDM uses a thin, electrically charged wire to cut conductive materials with extremely high precision, allowing complex shapes and fine features to be produced without mechanical cutting forces. The process removes material through controlled electrical discharges, making it especially effective for hard or difficult-to-machine metals.
  • Because there is no physical cutting force, wire EDM can achieve tight tolerances, sharp internal corners, and intricate geometries without introducing deformation or stress into the part. It is commonly used for components that require high accuracy, fine details, or consistent repeatability across critical dimensions.
  • Wire EDM is particularly valuable when conventional machining would struggle with tool access, material hardness, or feature precision. It is often used for precision components, tooling, and parts with complex internal profiles that cannot be produced efficiently by milling or turning.
  • Compared to traditional machining, wire EDM enables higher precision, better edge quality, and the ability to process hardened materials, though it is typically used for lower-volume or high-value parts due to its slower cutting speed.
Specifications
Materials Suitable for Wire EDM  Process:

  Types Applications
Die & Tool Steels   SKD11, D2, H13, A2, P20, Cr12MoV, etc. The most common application for wire EDM. Especially suitable for machining hardened/tempered tool steels with extremely high precision and no deformation. Used for stamping dies, injection molds, wire drawing dies.
Stainless Steel  304, 316, 17-4PH, 420, etc. Smooth surface finish after machining, good corrosion resistance. Used for medical devices (surgical instruments, implants), food equipment, and precision mechanical parts.
Titanium Alloys  Ti-6Al-4V (TC4/Grade 5), Commercially Pure TA1/TA2, etc. Wire EDM's non-contact cutting force perfectly solves titanium's difficult machinability. Achieves excellent surface quality (up to Ra 0.4μm). Widely used in aerospace structural parts, biomedical implants.
  Types Applications
Superalloys Inconel, Hastelloy, Monel, etc. One of wire EDM's "strong suits." These materials are extremely difficult to machine traditionally. Used for critical components in aircraft engines, gas turbines.
Carbide/Cermet Tungsten steel, Cemented carbide, etc. High hardness, high wear resistance. Wire EDM precisely cuts them into desired shapes. Essential for manufacturing cutting tools, wear-resistant parts, and mold components.
Common Non-Ferrous Metals Aluminum (6061/7075), Brass, Pure Copper, Beryllium Copper, etc. Fast cutting speed (e.g., aluminum up to 8mm²/min or more), high efficiency. Used for electronic parts, heat sinks, connectors, and EDM electrodes.
Other Specialty Materials Molybdenum (Mo), Tantalum (Ta), Platinum (Pt), Tungsten (W), Silicon (Si), Graphite, etc. Rare metals, refractory metals, or semiconductor materials that are very difficult to machine traditionally, but wire EDM handles them effectively. Graphite is commonly used for EDM electrodes.
